I’ve put instructions together on how to change the Product Code of your E71 and update the firmware to the latest Generic EURO1 version.
1. Install latest version of NSS from B-Freaks (as Virtual device)
2. Connect E71 phone via USB cable (PC Suite connection mode)
3. Click NSS icon on desktop.
4. Click ‘Scan for new device’, see Figure 1.

5. Click ‘Phone Info’, see Figure 2.

6. Click the Actions ‘Scan’, see Figure 2
7. Click the Production Data Edit ‘Read’, see Figure 3.

Your current Product Code should be displayed, please take note of this.
8. Click the ‘Enable’ box next to Product Code and change the code from 0570631 (3UK) to 0567045 (EURO1).
9. Click the Production Data Edit ‘Write’, see Figure 4. You can check the write has worked by clicking the ‘Read’ again.

10. Close NSS and open Nokia Software Updater (NSU) which is part of PC Suite and update the firmware of your E71.
If your phone is still in warranty I advise when the firmware update is complete to run NSS again and change your product code back to the original one.

Gerry, I appreciated your cluing me into this way to upgrade my E71. Unfortunately, your product code did not work for my particular phone (0569371). Another website had a similar approach as yours and their product code did work for my phone. I wouldn’t have made a further search if it hadn’t been for your original information. Again many thanks. FYI the code that did work was from symbian-guru.com and was 0559585. There were some caviats for people needing a certain types of keyboard, but that is beyond my ken. Have no idea why Nokia rejected your code in their updater since the code was allowed for an upgrade from their website. Just thought you should know. Sincerely, G. Bodhi
Its very easy to use and interesting took around 30mins includoing installation of all said softwares.
thanx:-)

Hi,
Just wanted to say that Gerry’s instructions and code worked for my e71.
thanks
Hi,
Great stuff. Using your help I’ve updated my E71 to the latest firmware on a 3UK phone (product code 0569999). It’s got me over a big problem that I had with tunes skipping every couple of minutes over a2dp bluetooth in my car. Just roadtested it and its fine now.
A word to the wise though: be very careful when restoring backed up phone data from NPS onto the phone after the firmware update. First time I restored the ‘phone settings’ and nearly bricked the phone. It seems that the mods that my mobile company had made to the original firmware weren’t compatible with the new firmware, resulting in it not being able to boot up. Somehow I did get it to boot, re-installed the new firmware, and left out the phone settings from the backup restore. it works a charm now.
Once again, thanks gerrymoth, you’ve ended a week of tearing my hair out!
I dont understand, how can two E71’s can have the same product code? More over, after i change the product code & start upgrading, at the end it gives an error & asks me to remove cable, charger & battery and retry again. Unfortunately nothing happens whn i do as instructed. Phone remains as before.

Hi,
Did debranding your E71 stop 3’s Skype client from working? Would it also stop 3’s video calls from working? I’m interested in trying this out, but would hate to lose Skype especially.
Cheers,
Tom
Sorry not got back to you sooner.
If you rebrand your 3 mobile you’ll not lose Skype or 3 video calling. If you want the 3 Skype app its available in the download section of nokiaaddict.com
The only things you will lose with rebranding are the MSN app and the ability to download games from 3.
[...] not alone, and “Gerrymoth“, all-round Nokia fan and also on the 3 network, wrote a guide to debranding a 3UK Nokia E71 to a generic “EURO1″ [...]
Just a quick question, will debranding my E71 on the 3UK network give me the options to use SIP and a outgoing call option. As at the moment its been blocked by 3UK ?? Sorry if sounds a dumb question, little new to unlocking phones, just a simple web developer
Unbranding ur 3uk E71 will allow you to use SIP and set 2G (GSM Only) or 2G/3G
Hey Guys,
I changed my code to 0567045 but still I’m getting the same message. “No Software updates available for your phone”. Do you guys have any solution for this ?
I don’t understand why its not showing the latest firmware v21 as this is the product code I use for my E71?
Are you sure you’ve changed the product code sucessfully with NSS, did you read the code again to check its worked?
I’ll check tonight though and see what the NSU is saying when I plug my E71 in.
@Joe: Just tried my E71 in NSU with Product Code 0567045 and its showing to re-install version 210, s have you got the last NSu installed or the correct product code?
Hi,
Just a couple of questions. Just got the e71 with 3 love the phone and surprisingly the service from 3 out side my house. Not bothered about skype or msn, however can I still access the planet3 jobbie and my account details etc. My main reason for updating the firmware is the 3g signal in my house is bad, hold the hand set out of a window or the door its great LOL. I am a bit wary of unbranding as I only just got it, but happy with coverage everywhere else and use.
And of course will three notice anything, you do suggest re-inputting the code back if under warranty.
Many thanks
I can access everything on 3 (Planet 3, Check my usage, etc..) with my rebranded E71, only thing I can’t use is downloaded 3UK games and the 3MSN app.
I rebranded after 2 days with my 3UK E71 just to get the 2G only lock and then to update my firmware to the lastest Nokia version 210.
The reason I say put the Product Code back to the original is JUST in case the phone goes wonky and you have to send back, it will show up in a repair center as a 3UK Product Code
I’ve unbranded all my 3 phones to get thhe best of of them, oh and the newer firmware is so so so much better than the fixed v100 that 3 only have.
NOTE: These are my views only and its always up to the individual and at their risk to tamper with product codes and firmware
But its pi55 easy, so on you go
Many thanks will give it a go, though I assume if you get the right 3 product code you could reverse the update.
You can go back the way with firmware very easily. If 3 had the same firmware version then its as easy as changing product codes and reinstalling using NSU
Hi,
Many thanks took the plunge, can access everything, even download games, windows live no go (dont use it anyway). Iplayer works better allows me to download, wouldnt give me that option on the version before, all very smooth. Managed to keep virtually everything using nokia suite, application menu wasnt working right intially on the home screen and locking me out of the menu options got into eventally, factory reset sorted that. Should have read pike’s paragraph on that one.
THKS
Excellent guide! I cant believe I paid for the exact same steps on eBay.
Im having a few problems with my handset, and I think I might have to send it back to 3. Stupidly, I never noted down the original product code when putting in the generic version.
Could someone on the 3 UK network who also recently got an E71 post their original 3 firmware product code please, if you dont mind, I would appreciate it.
As Matt stated the original Product Code should be on a label when you take the battery out, should start with 05XXXXX
My bad, I found it eventually lol.
Thanks alot.
The original product code should be underneath your battery
Well I having a further tinker, as did intially try to get windows live working with three link though it left a question mark on the application on the phone, so was trying to get rid of it, However I have managed to get it working, downloaded though dont know if three will charge me. Though you are probably aware of the guide on the net, will post link if anybody interested.
I have the XSeries Silver Internet Add on and use Nimbuzz for al my IM Accounts (GTalk, Yahoo, MSN, Skype, AIM, Facebook, etc..)
This worked great thanks. Does this actually unlock the phone as I had an argument just the other day with 3 because their signal is crap, yet they refused to unlock the phone for free. Said they’d drop the £15 in good faith but only after I moaned for a while but still said I’d have to pay the rest of the 18months contract up. Told them to sod off and that I’m not def not renewing my contract when it’s up next year.
Changing the product code, doesn’t unlock the device
Yeah just found that out
oh well. Want a way to unlock it now as 3 are useless. Still updated firmware is good enough

Great dude!! it works pretty fine for me!, thanks a lot for all.
guys good work on the guide… but i wanted to know is there an ACTUAL LIMIT to the no. of times the product code on a device can be changed(say 3times)? or can you keep changing the product code as many times as you want?
i just got a 3uk e71(PC:0569999)and am thinking of getting the latest firmware for it but the only problem is that i dont know if ill be valid for warranty after the product code change?any ideas?
Sorry I haven’t responsed sooner to this. You can change the Product Code as many times as you want. Oh and you will valida the warranty, that’s why I advise changing the product code back to the original once you’ve updated the firmware.
i am on v210 on my 3uk e71 and i did change the PC back to 0569999 the 3uk’s product code… but without the animations during start up and other changes will they not trouble you during claiming warranty?
also are you aware of the fact that as of now im in my 1st two weeks of my contract.. can they change the contract to the the one for the n97 if i go n talk to them now?
thnx for clearing my doubt abt changing the PC.
Great it works with my “3″ branded phone!
Thx al lot!
While I am highly interested in doing this to receive the latest, fully functioning firmware I am somewhat concerned about the warranty. Even if I change the product code back, surely they will see that it’s no longer got the 3 branding or correct firmware on it?
There are people on the Nokia discussion boards reporting lots of big problems with the latest E71 firmware.
See: http://discussions.nokia.co.uk/discussions/board/message?board.id=swupdate&thread.id=51239&view=by_date_ascending&page=1
Has anyone who updated their phone using the instructions above experienced similar problems?
@all ive just recently got one but when placed side by side (with a 6120c) in same location both on 3UK. The signal on the E71 is very weak (like zero-2 fluctuating bars) compared to the 6120c which has 3 or 4 bars constant. Ive read on net that the e71 has signal problems. Can anyone please confirm whether the latest (generic) firmware update resolves this issue?
Some info: if anyone wants to unlock their E71, can be done via the USB cable that comes with it:) you have to search for ‘dejan TRK unlocker’ but it costs 20 euros to unlock it. There is a free solution (search net for zulea v2 or v201) however you need extra hardware for this (unless you can ammend the free software to route the unlock commands via USB cable)
Firmware update doesn’t improve signal strength. I’ve noticed my E71 doesn’t have the same signal strength that say my N95 8GB had.

Gerry, great tutorial. Thanks!! A question for those of us on 3UK- how do we get the settings back once we have debranded to be able to access 3 services, i.e. MMS, internet settings etc.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Same boat as Matt – after updating the firmware presumable internet connection settings are lost? They’re configured on my phone at the moment (pre-debranding) but they’re locked (thanks, 3) so I can’t see them. Anyone know where to find them?

gerry
great tutprial.
Im considering buying the handset (on 3UK) within this week. Before de-branding, does the phone need to be unlocked first?
cheers
Hello all – Hopefully someone can help or give guidance on this – Have just flashed my E71 (3UK) to the new firmware (v3.00) and have noticed I no longer get 3G/2G – only standard 3 as my connection – is there a setting I can get from somewhere to enable this – I can no longer access the full Planet3 website as it think im in a non 3G area -although I used to be able to fine
By the way thanks for the brilliant tutorial – works a treat!
I bought an open line E71 instead…
You do not need to unlock the phone to unbrand it
You should find the network settings in tools/settings/phone/network
You’re tutorial worked great for me (including the code). I had to uninstall the latest update of PC Suite and install the PC Suite on the CD that came with the phone as the NSS scan did not work on the latest PC suite, but thereafter it worked like a charm! Thanx a lot, I now have a debranded Nokia E71!!!
Might be a silly question, but just wondered what is the purpose of changing the code on NSS back to the old code if it is still under warranty. The code on the phone would still be the new code, wouldn’t it
worked a treat Gerry.
now I’ll be able to receive the full suite of nags from my beloved dearest wife without having to go outside our Faraday box W427
Hi Gerry! Great tute hoping you or someone else can help me. I initially had a Vodafone branded E71-1 unlocked which I unfortunately ran over so purchased a supposed generic E71-3 but it had network software included so the SA changed the firmware but then when I checked the firmware it had an older fw to what I originally had AND it was saying it was E71-1 so I did a PCS update and it brought my phone back to original factory settings with the network software.
I then did the whole product code change and then updated my software to the latest and then restored my backup from the original E71-1 to my E71-3. Problem was that I also restored the Vodafone settings which I couldn’t delete so I resetted to factory settings and this kept the backup info but no Voda icon on startup and the access points were no longer locked and was erasable.
Now I’ve got the E71-3 in it’s ideal state where it has the latest fw, still saying E71-3 and have all my old info in it eg.contacts, games etc BUT I read I can brick my phone by restoring so should I do anything or leave it as is? Also I’m going to put my old product code back in, in the event that a new fw comes up should I re-restore my backup again or not? Won’t that mean that each time I upgrade I’ll loose all contacts, bookmarks etc?
Lastly when I factory resetted how come it kept all my info like contacts etc it didn’t reset it per se. Looking forward to ANY help as luck has played great at this stage I’m scared to do anything else in case I brick my phone. Thanks!
What are the main benefits of updating the firmware?
Hi Angelica ,
I have a “3″ branded e71-3 phone. I would like to load the generic firmware – can you please tell me what the product code is for the generic e71-3 phone?
Thanks, Wim
I changed my 3UK E71-1 to product code 0567045
May i re-updated my Nokia E71 V300.210.012 (Europe) to V300.210.012 (ASIA).
Because chinese font is missing, and i need to re-update it into chinese version of V300.210.012 firmware.
Is there any risk that i will brick my phone? Is there any possible way to do?
Need you solution.
Thanks
You should be able to change the firmware if its the same version, you can’t go back the way to a previous version. Just change ur product code again using NSS and reinstall firmware.
Like all firmware updates there is always a risk the update fails as NSU is like a small child and sometimes misbehaves
Hi gerry, same problem as Fanny. But with latin keyboard. (some keys do not work after the update). Could you please explain how to reinstall firmware in the original language/region? Thx
hey
tried using the NSS and when i scanned my phone it kept saying error… i reinstalled NSS and im still getting error
any suggestions?

why would you want to lock your phone to GSM rather than 3G?
Well it all wnet to plan…. but nomore Planet3 for me….

Well it’s broken. Camera not working. Needs to go back to 3. I have changed product code back so we’ll have to see what happens.
Dave
Hi. I used NSS successfully to change the product code. I am now battling to ‘revert’ to the original code (phone needs to go in for repairs under warrantee). Error code on searching for device (after I click on the magnifying glass) related to “loaders not installed”. From that point onwards, NSS will not read, or write to the phone. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Not sure? Can PC Suite connect to the phone okay? Trying turning phone and PC and starting fresh? Never had any problems with NSS
PC suite connect perfectly, and works normally. I have uninstalled, and re-installed NSS a number of times.
Strange thing though – even with the fone not connected, if I open NSS and click on the magnifying glass, it give me the same details (with the error) as when the fone is connected?
Thanks for the assistance
awesome – tks gerrymoth, managed to pick up a one month old 3 branded e71 at a good price – £8 to unlock, free to debrand – very happy
Hi, followed the tutorial, all worked great. I cant believe the difference it has made upgrading the firmware on my E71.3UK and Nokia shud be flogged for colluding against customers. Now I have upgraded, I can stream aac with real player, use mobbler and use BBC iPlayer, and all using my fone signal!!. The phone is amazing, it’s just a shame u need to struggle to upgrade. If anyone is thinking of upgrading don’t hesitate. Thanks very much GerryMoth
Would this not invaldate the handset warranty? What would happen if I sent a de-branded handset to the repair centre with a fault?
Hi,
I’ve got a Nokia E71 on the 3UK network. If I try to access certain sites (www.modelmayhem.com, http://www.iambored.com and others) it says the sites are age restricted and won’t display them. I’ve setup a PIN on my account to allow me to view adult content (which neither of those sites are), but I still get the age restricted message. Three’s support has told me the restriction must be in the phone, and not on my account. Does anyone know if debranding will remove this restriction?

Hi, update to 300.21.012 worked a treat. Most problems have now gone away but now it shows an “Insert SIM” error every morning. Have reseated the SIM but problem keps coming back. Any suggestions?
I’ve terrible night (19 September 2009), I was upgrade firmware my E71, I left my computer when downloading the firmware from nokia to my PC.
When I’m back, I see my LCD E71 full white, can’t do anything, and the PC show the error message can’t continue upgrade. Then I plug off the cable, plug off the battery. Then Plug in again the battery, start E71, then after a little light comes up not for long then going dark again.
any suggestions ?
fyi, I want to upgrade from version 2.???? to version 3.???? (the newest firmware for E71).
I upgrade my firmware using internet connection from my E71 also.

Hi I managed to follow the instruction and debrand my E71. But I lost most of my apps and text messages!! I back up everything before debranding and then restored it after rebrand but apps and messages were not restored. Has anyone faced the same problem and if so is there away to restore your apps and messages.
THANK YOU – worked.
Hi, Great set of instructions. So simple to follow, so I did.
It was all going well as I tried to go from firmware 100 to 300, on a E71.3uk. Everything worked perfectly until I tried to reinstall my settings from a backup made from Nokia Pc suite.
Now I think Ive bricked it:( As the phone starts up it says “Phone start-up Failed. Contact the retailer” Any Ideas how to get it working again, I dont think 3 will be to happy to help me with this one.
Any suggestions? How to get it back to either the working firmware I had, or back to the original basic 3 one???
Thanks
Hi all,
thanks for this guide, that’s what I needed.
However, when I change the product code, I’m unable to update firmware using Nokia Software Updater (no updates found), even Nokia pages, where you can check if update is available inputting product code, says that update is available. Has anyone experience with this? I would appreciate any advice how to update firmware. Thank you.
Are you sure you’ve changed the product code correctly? Try reading again to make sure on NSS
Try turning phone off and holding red, green and powering on. This is a hard reset.
If this doesn’t work, try connecting to NSU and see if you can reinstall your firmware again?
I checked in NSS, product code seems to be changed correctly. Didn’t try the hard reset yet, will give it a shot.
Unfortunately it did not help. I can only change product code to original one and reinstall current available firmware 210.21.006.
Awesome! Worked 1st time with no problems at all! paid £15 for the unlock code from 3, now can put my o2 sim in it! Thanks Dude
I installed the new firmware for my e72 n everything worked fine till the restart. Once the phone restarted it started playing up. Things like the home screen is not working properly. Phone suddenly pops up, contacts screen pops up, the settings screen does not go back to the home screen. Its not even recognizing the phone when I try search for a phone Scan device on NSS. I am kinda freaked out.. what should I do? Need urgent help.
everything’s working super but cant change the product code to original.
thank you for the tutorial. it worked 100% on my e71 and i used the product code you used (0567045), only one question.. should i change back to the original product code?
an advanced big thanks. =)
I’d just change it back in case anything else happens to the phone and you need to send it back. Original product code won’t raise suspicions
